Statistics compiled by consultant Andrew Otterburn demonstrate a growing trend amongst smaller and medium sized legal firms towards potential future mergers.  The latest set of statistics demonstrate that 21 of the 64 firms surveyed, just short of a third, believe there is a good chance of a merger in the coming year, in comparison to two years previously, when that figure stood at closer to a quarter, 26%.  Over the same period, the number of companies who felt a merger was unlikely fell significantly, down from just short of half (47%) to almost a quarter (28%).  All of this has the potential to have an impact on law jobs, but it is not clear whether these changes could be negative or positive regards the number of jobs available.
